Guidance

  1. Keep It Simple – A good flag design is so simple that any person of any age group could easily draw it from memory
  2. Use Meaningful Symbolism – The colors, shapes, and symbols you use should be relevant and meaningful to Frankfort, KY
  3. Use No More Than 3 to 4 Basic Colors – Colors should be basic, relevant to Frankfort, and properly contrasted
  4. Things To Avoid – Letters, Words, Numbers, Pictures, Logos, Seals. These don’t belong on well designed flags.
  5. Be Distinct or Distinctively Related – Don’t copy other flags or, if you do, the new flag design should be clearly relatable to the other flag or flags. In other words, the non-Frankfort flag should have something clearly relatable to Frankfort.

Dimensions

The recommended flag dimensions are 10(h) x 19(w). These will be the official dimensions of the new Frankfort flag. These dimensions were chosen as the official because 10:19 is the ratio of both the flag of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the United States of America. Be aware that most manufacturers produce flags only in ratios of 1:2, 2:3, or 3:5. So any design you submit should be adaptable to these standards while remaining officially 10:19.

Regulations

Submission of this form acknowledges that any submitted design(s) or design element(s) enter the public domain if utilized in any Frankfort, KY flag design. The Frankfort Flag design group reserves the right to reject, modify, or combine any submission. 

The mission of this initiative is to develop and present for adoption a reimagined design for the flag of the city of Frankfort, Kentucky which is both distinctive and representative of the community while also adhering to flag design guidelines which will allow the broad adoption of this new design.

Submitters must physically reside within Franklin County, KY or establish a clear connection to Frankfort and also acknowledge that the Frankfort Flag Initiative committee retains the sole right to judge and possibly reject eligibility based upon a thorough review of the described connection.
