FLAG OF FRANKFORT, KY
Frankfort, KY has officially adopted its newly revised city flag. The city commissioners voted unanimously to amend the code of ordinances with the new design language at the December 9th, 2024 commission meeting. The flag immediately enters the public domain and belongs to the people of Frankfort.
FLAG SYMBOLISM: THE RIVER
The Kentucky River flows through the heart of Frankfort in an iconic “S” shaped series of bends in the river. The river has played a central role in both the culture and commerce of Frankfort for many hundreds, if not thousands, of years. As the river flows north to south, the flag’s curve flows and widens from the fly to the hoist, or, “Into the wind.” This symbolizes Frankfort’s growth and that no headwinds will interrupt the flow of Frankfort into the future.
FLAG SYMBOLISM: THE STARS
The star-within-star design represents Frankfort’s dual nature in many respects. It is both the capital of Kentucky and the county seat of Franklin County. The river divides the city into its tradition North and South sides. They represent Frankfort’s rich past and growth towards a bright future. Frankfort was originally, “Frank’s Ford,” and was a key river crossing around which the city grew. The stars cross the river, bridging the gap between North and South, past and future.
FLAG SYMBOLISM: THE COLORS
The flag of Kentucky contains goldenrod surrounding the white seal of the Commonwealth on a navy blue field. As such, the original 1959 Frankfort flag mirrored these colors. Similarly the newly revised flag mirrors these colors to honor its role as Kentucky’s capital and to pay tribute to the original city flag.
